Behind The Scenery

Here are some interesting, yet little known facts about our land management efforts:

  • Forest Society staff travel approximately 40,000 miles each year managing our lands. Staff average more than two hours of travel time for each property.
  • It cost the Forest Society more than $6 per acre each year to manage these lands.
  • More than 450 miles of bounds are maintained (approximately 45 miles each year). One person averages 1.5 miles per day using one quart of boundary paint per mile.
  • More than 63 miles of trails and 26 miles of internal roads are maintained.
  • 60 percent of Forest Society reservations are impacted by ATV use.
  • More than 50 trained volunteers help monitor and care for these lands. They donated more than 1,000 hours of service in the past year.
  • 3,700 acres are inventoried each year for timber and other natural resource values.
  • More than 208 acres of fields are maintained on 29 properties, ranging in size from half an acre to more than 17 acres.
  • More than 80 gates are installed at $600 per gate.
  • 1,866 numbered metal tags have been placed on boundary corners.
  • 80 properties have wooden property signs that must be replaced at five to eight year intervals.
  • It's a 16-step process to make a property sign, costing an average of $120 for construction and $92 for installation.
  • Forest Society lands were the first Forest Stewardship Council “green-certified” lands in New Hampshire in 1999.
  • Our lands have also been certified by the New Hampshire Tree Farm Program since 1963.
  • During the past five years, Forest Society timber sales have averaged 800,000 board feet, 2,300 cords, and generated $132,000.
  • Forest Society land management staff has more than 90 years of professional experience.
