Since 1993, the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests has trained volunteers to become land stewards. Stewards monitor their adopted properties throughout the year and serve as local ambassadors for the Forest Society.
Conservation commissions, land trusts, and other conservation organizations have also benefited from these energetic and dedicated volunteers.
Land Steward Qualifications
- Live within 20 miles of a targeted forest reservation.
- Have a desire to gain a thorough knowledge of your adopted property.
- Be able to attend all required weekday training sessions (approximately 80 hours). Training session topics include: wildlife ecology, trail maintenance, forest management, habitat improvement and others. A nominal fee is charged for this training.
- Have a flexible schedule that allows weekday participation in advanced land steward training and field work.
- Be able to visit property year-round.
Responsibilities
- Monitor the property: act as the Forest Society’s eyes and ears.
- Report any vandalism or misuse of property.
- Maintain gates and signs.
- Remove litter and debris.
- Perform basic trail maintenance and wildlife habitat improvement, if needed.
- Assist with building and grounds maintenance (where applicable).
- Assist Forest Society staff with field work such as property surveys, road work, inventories, and boundary maintenance.
- Act as liaison with local officials, schools, neighbors, conservation organizations, and other Forest Society members.
- Report plant and wildlife sightings.
- File quarterly activity and property status reports.
